EU Unveils €20 Billion Plan to Establish AI Gigafactories

In a bold move to position Europe at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) development, the European Union (EU) has announced a €20 billion initiative to construct AI "gigafactories" across the continent. These state-of-the-art facilities are designed to house over 100,000 advanced AI processors, significantly enhancing Europe's AI capabilities and competitiveness on the global stage. ​

Historically, Europe has lagged behind the United States and China in AI innovation. In 2024, the U.S. produced 40 major AI models, China developed 15, while Europe contributed a mere three, all from France. The EU's InvestAI fund aims to mobilize €200 billion for AI investments, with the €20 billion allocated for the construction of AI gigafactories.
